Andrews Serkis’ bolder adaptations of novels written by India-born authors

Andrew Serkis’ recent bold adaptation of Mowgli set a benchmark that flies in the face of filmmakers who have long been playing safe in creating content appropriate for kids, thereby eroding the baseline essence and profundity of the original novels.

Why do storytellers feel obligated to dilute and sanitise content in order to fit in the bracket of family-friendly and clean entertainment? Have we collectively regressed to infantilism in our bid to mollycoddle kids? Are we undermining kids’ psychology by serving them a saccharin diet of simplistic stories that were originally meant to be profound and thought-provoking?

Deducing from Serkis’ body of work, one can see a pattern insofar as the themes of the stories stand. It’s notable that the recent movies in Serkis’ oeuvre are adaptations of stories that were penned by authors born in India. Although written during the times of British Raj, they stand spookily relevant in the Indian scenarios to this day. Born in India’s artistic Acropolis, J.J school of Arts located in Mumbai, Hindi-speaking Rudyard Kipling grew up around Indian idioms in his boyhood days. It’s only when he is grudgingly ferried to an English boarding school that his anglicisation prepares him for authoring the world-class legends like Mowgli and KimHaving bagged the first ever highest honour for English Literature (Nobel Prize), his characters remain deeply entrenched in Indian cultural moorings as we occasionally get to feast upon many Hindi words in his works.

Another author, George Orwell, better known for his dystopian magnum opus 1984, which warns us about the threat of totalitarianism and different possible ways in which governments can oppress citizens, was born in India in the Bihar region of Motihari. His book, Animal Farm’s adaptation by Serkis, which is in the works, is a classic indictment of Marxist ideology in form of allegorical social commentary on the Stalinist era. The story is centred on the rebellion of farm animals against humans, who own their farm, adopt the rule of equality in the beginning only to later go rogue and adopt the same sinister policies that their movement had previously opposed.

In the early days of the 90’s era, Cartoon network had oodles and oodles of content that would never see the light of day, had the stories been pitched in this day and age. The paradigm has shifted in favour of in loco parentis thematics where content is skinned of its essence, washed down with censorship and put to dry before it’s sufficiently suitable for consumption.

In the era of overly regulated adaptations of legends, Andrew Serkis is truly a breath of fresh air owing to his quest for portraying them as they were meant to be in spirit.

Orwell’s intellectual bullets in works like 1984 and Animal Farm have long been puncturing holes in widely-held beliefs and ideologies. His polemics and essays are regarded as great works of scholarship and literature.

Contrary to what people might think about it being a children’s book, Animal Farm is actually a mature and thought-provoking novel. We hope Serkis continues the tradition and pulls no punches in portraying even the darker aspects that capture the essence of the story. Ahoy to Serkis movies and the fillip they add to the spirit of mature cinema!

Christmas animated shorts that will melt your heart

What would Christmas be without love? It is sharing. It is caring. It is all the emotions bundled and wrapped together to gift your near and dear ones. What is celebration without all this, and what is all this without your dear people. These Christmas shorts will bring out the emotions in you, making you feel loved and cared.

Here is a list of animated shorts I found fascinating:

This animated short shows how friends bring out the best in you. How they never let your limitations hamper you friendship. An advertisement from Erste, this super cute animation is sure to melt your heart.

As the story says Christmas is all about believing in love.

Christmas is about sharing. What is the greatest gift you can give your family? Is there a gift as precious as you? And, this short tells us exactly that.

This festive spot is bound to tug at a few heart strings. A differently scripted and conceptualised short, it shows how important family is when you are celebrating. Live action and animation combined together, this advertisement short keeps you smiling.

This animated short from TheCGBros is a perfect lighting to brighten up your mood this evening. Decorating you tree for tomorrow? This movie would give you a kick-start!

Gordon, the goose is ready for Christmas. Are you? With a creative angle to the story and an ideal animation technique, this animated short is funny with a festive touch to it.

This Vodafone Christmas advertisement is cute and warm at the same time. A reindeer returns home only to see nobody present. But, his loved ones have a surprise planned for him. See what happens in this snowy little animal kingdom.

This poor bear is the only animal that never gets to celebrate Christmas because he has to hibernate during that time. However, this year, his friend Hare has a brilliant idea. Created with a mixture of traditional 2D hand-drawn animation, stop frame, and 3D model made sets, the advertisement is bliss to watch.

Add your favourite films to the list and let the love spread, because Christmas is all about love. Celebrations begin with your loved ones!

Director of SAARC and MENA region for Animation International Nitin Kalra shares nuggets of insight.

Nitin Kalra is director of SAARC and MENA region for Animation International through AI Licensing India Pvt Ltd. Kalra was at Bengaluru at ABAI’s AVGC B2B summit to check out and pick some IP. Kalra has found two or three proposals interesting and will be meeting the creative teams of these projects for the second round soon. Here are excerpts of a small interaction that he had with AnimationXpress

Tell us something about your company and your role/responsibility in it. How long have (a) your company (b) you personally been in this business?

AI Licensing India Pvt. Ltd (Animation International – India) is part of the Hong Kong-headquartered Animation International Limited, which has been in the business of Licensing, Merchandising and Content Syndication for 39 years. We have 17 offices all over Asia, Middle East and CIS region and our biggest IP has been Doraemon, which we represent across all our territories. Animation International – India started operations in India in 2005. We have five business verticals – Licensing, Exports, Syndication, Experiential and Creative Studio.  I joined the company in January 2010 and now serve as Director for SAARC and MENA region. Prior to this, I was with STAR India, part of the Licensing team where I joined in 2006. So overall I have been in Licensing for 13 years now.

Which markets do you serve? What are the products/brands/licenses that you handle and the companies that you are associated with? Both as a buyer and as a seller – if that applies to you.

I currently manage business in all SAARC and MENA countries. Under licensing, we represent Doraemon, Shin Chan, Garfield, Albert Einstein, Charlie Chaplin and Hallmark Design Collection.

What are the other places that you visit for content procurement? At what level does your company enter into a partnership with the content creator/s? Do you mentor good ideas and IP from the nascent to the completion stage?

Yes, we work with several companies mentoring them from the concept stages, offering our expertise in syndication as well as with licensing and merchandising.

How can content be made to be globally accepted? What are the sensibilities that have to be considered at the ideation/creation stage so that content is accepted irrespective of geography, political, racial, religious, cultural and other differences?

The world is really shrinking now and the fact that one can sit anywhere in the world and access content of his or her own choice makes it more important for content creators to focus on themes that have global relevance. Emotions have always played a strong role across content lines and as long as your creation connects with the emotional side of people, you will always have a winner on hands.

What is your take on Indian products? How do they compare with other countries? What do you think they lack? What do you think needs improvement?

Indian IPs today are still not on par with the international counterparts. The main reason is most Indian brand owners are still focusing on Indian concepts like mythology, religion or Indian history. Most makers thoughts are so restrictive on concepts that they just can’t see beyond these, which becomes an obvious hindrance as these are not accepted in the global markets. Secondly, Indian animators still lack the vision of grandness in their creation – it may be due to a lack of resources, proper training or simply they haven’t explored the world markets yet. I strongly believe that going to international markets, visiting trade shows, etc. does add to one’s experience and that’s what organizations like ABAI are trying to do.

What has been your experience with ABAI’s B2B events like? I think you were there for two of three B2B summits?

Originally our syndication business was managed from Hong Kong. My first participation in the B2B summit made me realize that the time has come for us to seriously deal with Indian content and distributors from India itself. Hence I convinced my management to set up resources in India, which we now have a team. ABAI’s B2B lead us to this change and I am happy we did because, in my second appearance on the event, I can confidently say that we are all set to acquire some content that was showcased to us.

What is your take on pitchers (a) in India at ABAI B2B (b) other similar Indian/foreign events in India (c) in other events in other geographies? How do you think they differ and what are their similarities? What do Indian pitchers lack, and what needs improvement?

As compared to the previous season, this time the pitches were more relevant, people had done their homework a little better than the first season. However still there are many issues with our pitchers – most of them lack confidence in themselves to present their ideas, which obviously leaves us to question if they really have confidence in their own product? I strongly believe that a lot of training will be required to get them on par with their international counterparts. I have recommended to ABAI to look at options like organizing training sessions for pitchers before the event so they can more confidence and more clarity about what they are pitching for.

What do you think of ABAI’s initiatives for bringing buyers and pitchers together? Have/will they been/be fruitful for you? What needs improvement? What has been lacking?

It is a wonderful initiative and I feel it will strengthen as it grows year on year. Timing is the key to making arrangements and I believe this year many pitchers couldn’t be included due to lack of time. if the event is planned a bit more in advance it will be beneficially for both buyers and pitchers.

For events such as ABAI’s B2B, could you explain the various stages taken and the time frames involved before the dotted line is signed by your company?

From our point of view, our first priority is to look for ready to market content, which I was able to get during the B2B summit. We have already initiated dialogues with such content owners to sign deals to allow us to represent their catalogues in the international markets. On concepts that are in the early stages, at this stage we are not looking to invest in new IPs ourselves. However, we are happy to mentor people who are keen to get advice on how they should proceed with their ideas in the market by providing them leads to other potential buyers in the industry.

Audiomotion uses Vicon’s mocap to create an ice-free skating rink for ‘The Nutcracker and the Four Realms’

In Walt Disney Pictures’ latest holiday blockbuster, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, filmmakers create a beautiful version of Victorian London, complete with nineteenth century families celebrating the holiday season. One scene of Christmas revelry includes several people ice skating against a backdrop of the fictionalised London, which required an unusual setup.

To create these moving characters on ice, VFX house Audiomotion used its Vicon motion capture system to turn its studio into an ice skating rink – minus the ice.

“This film allowed us to create multiple worlds, each more impressive than the last,” said Audiomotion managing director Brian Mitchell. “The ice skating scene was challenging for us to create as we needed to provide the best possible footage covering such a large area, and we couldn’t have done that without Vicon.”

Although Vicon’s motion capture cameras have been used to film movement on ice before, the additional challenges of working on a frictionless surface compound the issues for performer and filmmaker alike. Audiomotion instead came up with a simpler solution: rather than taking the performers to an ice rink, the team created an ice-free ice rink inside Audiomotion’s studio.

Six skaters were brought in – three professionals, two amateurs and one scene-stealing three-year-old – and given rollerblades. They then performed as if they were on ice, while Vicon’s Vantage recorded their full range of movements. The data was then sent to Vicon’s Shogun software to animate the characters.

Along with the ice-skating, Audiomotion worked with filmmakers to create several other mocap scenes throughout the film. Over the course of five days, performers rehearsed and shot scenes of varying degrees of physicality, from playing in the snow to diminutive clowns attacking the main character, Clara (Mackenzie Foy). For the action scenes, Audiomotion worked with the stunt team to help breathe life into the small, acrobatic clown-like characters that serve Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren). Recording the tumbles and fluidic movements of the polichinelle took two full days.

Audiomotion also supplied the film with several background characters to help bring the digitised London to life. Through a modular stage setup and Vicon’s optical systems that can change capture volumes on the fly, performers could incorporate props and alternate actions, while tracking the results in real-time using Vicon’s Shogun. The 5-day session also saw The Nutcracker and the Four Realms pay homage to the famed musical production, leading Audiomotion to capture performers ballroom dancing, engaging in traditional Russian dance and performing ballet, all in precise detail.

All work was completed at Audiomotion’s Oxford, UK studio, which contains three separate stages offering 60-by-40-by-20-feet volume for wire work and large scale capture. The studio also features two smaller capture volumes for either green screen mixed reality capture, or cut scenes for virtual reality. In total, the studio features 160 Vicon cameras, each feeding to Vicon’s Shogun software.

Disney’s The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is based on the short story, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, written in 1816 by German author E. T. A. Hoffman. That story was then adapted into the famed ballet, The Nutcracker, by choreographers Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, and composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Disney’s adaptation takes inspiration from both.

The film begins in Victorian London on Christmas Eve and centers on Clara, a young woman still mourning the death of her mother. When a mysterious box leads her into a hidden world of fantasy and magic that is at war, Clara begins to understand that her destiny may be bigger than she ever dreamed.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is currently in theaters across the United States and Europe, and was recently selected as one of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science’s contenders for the Best Visual Effects Oscar nomination.
