The Awakening: 5-Second Projects are Back.

5-second projects have returned! We are thrilled to announce the resurrection of this community favorite with The Awakening. Here are the winners.

The key to honing any skill is practice. That’s the goal of 5-second projects. Whether you want to create an original piece for your demo reel, or you just want to learn a new toolor technique, 5-second projects are a great way to accomplish that.

By giving you a theme, and a very strict 5-second length, it’s our goal to challenge you to meet the same rules you would in any professional project – guidelines and deadlines. You can use any animation software of choice, so don’t let anything hold you back.

To announce the return of 5-second projects, we gave our members in the Greyscalegorilla slack channel the chance to kick things off. The Awakening was this month’s theme, and we are very excited to announce the winners and showcase all the great submissions.

The next 5-second project is open to everyone, so keep an eye out on the 5-second project page for themes and deadlines.

Winner: Martin Clarke

The winner of this 5-second project was Martin Clarke. In only five seconds, Martin managed to make us laugh out loud. You can check out more of Martin’s work on his website mographster.com.

We wanted to learn a little bit more about his process, so we reached out to Martin about his 5-second project.

Greyscalegorilla: Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Martin Clarke: My name is Martin and I work under the name Mographster. I grew up in a place called Donegal, a nice fresh aired county in Ireland.

I studied graphic design before deciding to move into motion design a couple of year ago. I love learning C4D and After Effects and using them to move pixels around. I like to add humour into my work, and I feel it takes out my most creative side.

GSG: Tell about your process, and how you came up with this idea.

MC: I started off with a few ideas like an eye opening, but I thought more about the word awakening in terms of unconscious or being aware. With awareness, one thing that came to mind was “mindfulness.” When I practice mindfulness, I would sometimes fall asleep. This gave me a starting point and idea. I then began to write out rough scripts. One thing I wanted in the story was good humour, so I placed myself in it… naked.

The Awakening still via Martin Clarke.

The beginning would start off with objects sitting or balancing on top of each other. Why? You see this a lot in images of meditation. The door opening was my unconscious awakening me, then the awareness of where I was. The script did change a bit as I started working on the animatic. The point was to always refer back to the theme.

GSG: How did you get started with animating this concept?

MC: The animatic was important for seeing what worked, and what didn’t work. I started drawing storyboards to see if it would be too long, or when to cut to the next scene. I had to think about camera angles and sound also. It really helps using this technique before going any further.

Once the animatic was going in the right direction, I then started to build the style frames. I knew what style and colours I was going for, and I wanted to try a flat 2D style in C4D. This also worked well for the simple character animation and humour of the project. I did another more advanced animatic to check if it was going in the right direction again.

All the scenes, characters, and cars were built in C4D using simple primitive objects. I used the cel shader for the flat 2D style and infinite lights set to hard trace shadow. To help get the flat 2D look, I set the cameras to parallel which flattens the objects in the scene. After rendering out of C4D it was time to do a little bit of compositing and render out to Premiere Pro for the sound.

Second Place: Ben Carmelli

Taking second place was Ben Carmelli. Don’t worry, as Ben says, “No clocks were harmed in the making of this project.”

Ben has a really great must-read writeup on his 5-second project over on his Behance page. You’ll find some great behind-the-scenes photos and GIFs of his entire process.

Titan Comics to turn ‘Life Is Strange’ into a comic book

Titan Comics has partnered with Square Enix’s game series Life is Strange to publish comics based on it. This is going to be an opportunity for the fans to revisit Blackwell Academy and their beloved characters.

The original Life is Strange game was based on a young girl, Max Caufield who returns to her school in her hometown Oregon of Arcadia Bay. Her realisation of having powers to bend time helps save a kid’s life. The story revolves around her powers, loss, friendship and dealing with bullying.

Don’t Nod, the game developer created a world around the characters. The upcoming comic book series will showcase the Arcadia Bay as seen in Life is Strange: Before The Storm prequel of 2017. Since the release of Life is Strange series in 2015, it has become a gaming phenomenon, selling over three million copies and winning 75 awards and accolades.

In addition to the upcoming comic book, Titan has published comics based on Assassin’s Creed Origins, Wolfenstein II, and Bloodborne. The recent release from Titan is a comic inspired by Sea of Thieves, and the other is based on Dark Souls, which is slated to make its debut in May.

Titmouse Studios release test footage of cancelled ‘Deadpool’ animated series

Just days after the disappointing news of FXX’s jettisoning of Deadpool animated series due to creative difference between amongst them, Marvel and David Glover, American animation studios Titmouse released a footage of the series on its official YouTube handle to give a peek into what was in the making.

Apparently a test footage, the clip features the Merc with a Mouth engaging in the kind of barbarity that’s analogous to what we’ve seen in the 2016 Ryan Reynolds-starrer, also bellowing a voice that’s similar to the Hollywood star himself. His eccentricity and slapstick humour are some of the other quirks shown at full pelt here.

Deadpool is seen crossing swords (like literally) with a Gorilla Grodd-like monster on a helipad and getting both his hands and legs amputated by him before scissor-kicking his head against the blades of the helicopter and blowing the place up in flames. The video grab is also interspersed with what looks like caricatures of the fight sequence set in motion, before getting the timely animation touch.

Deadpool animated series was eagerly awaited by the fans after what its live-action equivalent served, but the news of its unfortunate demise left the fans crestfallen. And now to make matters worse, the test footage was promising enough for the fans to spew more barbs at the makers for its cancellation.

‘Jessica Jones’ and its creator Brian Bendis bids adieu to the Marvel Universe

The upcoming 18 April issue of Action Comics will not only feature the final episode of Jessica Jones, but will also mark its creator, Brian Michael Bendis’ (Miles Morales, Jessica Jones and Ironheart) farewell to the Marvel Universe.

It’s been an eventful six months for him, as in November the comics world was stirred by the news that the writer who had made Ultimate Spider-Man more popular than regular Spider-Man was leaving Marvel for an exclusive contract with DC Comics. In December he narrowly escaped death after being hospitalised for a week with an infection which was followed by the news of his possible move to DC, in February.

Bendis expressed his amazement for having created Jessica Jones. “I am very deeply proud of Jessica Jones. Not of my work, but of what blossomed out of it and I wanted to give her one perfect day. Not a perfect day for you or me, but a perfect day for her. A case that challenges her. A case she solves. A case only she could have solved. All while maintaining her shit. A perfect ‘her’ day. They are so rare. I thought that is what I owe Jessica. One perfect day,” he said in an open letter to the fans at the end of the issue.

As the story concludes, Jessica gets a new case to track down an obscure Marvel villain and reunite two lovers. In the process she comes across every superhero who has  encountered the villain lately including Miles Morales (the Spider-Man of the Ultimate Universe, whom Bendis made so popular that he was incorporated into the main timeline), Peter Parker, (Spider-Man of the regular Universe) and Riri Williams, the genius black teenage girl, all of whom contribute to Jessica Jones’ perfect day in small ways.

There are also appearances from Luke Cage (from the pages of Alias) and even the super-villain Owl, the running gag in his Daredevil.

Jessica Jones has always been a character Bendis used to access all corners of the Marvel Universe, and so it is natural he’d use the final issue to serve as his farewell to all of his fans.

TEGC is set to complete half a decade in 2018

The esports ecosystem in the country has been building up in quite a steady pace. With new players coming in and more indigenous brands and organisations taking leaps of faith into the realm of esports, the scene in the country is looking to be promising in the coming years.

While there are multiple tournaments and initiatives already announced and many scheduled to be revealed soon, not even a decade back there were only a handful of esports tournaments in the country. One of those events has managed to find its place as one of the most sought after esports events in the country, still.

Organised by Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TIATRA), Taiwan Excellence Gaming cup has been around for four years and is bracing for its fifth edition. Apart from the esports tournament, the organisation has also been taking part in various other events in and around the space of technology.

In a conversation with the team, they revealed that they have, for the second consecutive year, contributed to the Government of India’s ‘Smart Cities’ initiative by participating in the third Smart Cities India 2017 Expo. Apart from that, the organisation has also reportedly participated in Machine Tools Expo, SMART ASIA and several more.

With the main focus seemingly on high end technology, the interest in gaming stems of the same. Evidently, all the tournament venues of Taiwan Excellence are generally embellished with products from the leading hardware brands in the gaming sphere.  Taking this further, the TE Gaming Rig was revealed in Mumbai the previous year which travelled through the country for 100 days showcasing gaming gears, peripherals and more.

Taiwan Excellence had recently associated with Amity University for their Youth Fest where they showcased products from similar brands in the gaming space. Will this imply that the organisation is keen on bringing similar gaming tournaments like its known property to colleges and institutions? No word on that yet, though.

The gaming rig is likely to be a part of the tournament again and this time and as 2018 will mark the completion of five years for Taiwan Excellence Gaming Cup, what can we expect?
Being synonymous all things tech, we hope to see some additional innovations on the tournament completing half a decade in the Indian circuit and strengthen it’s presence as one of the noted esports events of the country.
