Comic Con goes to Africa as first ever convention on the continent announced

Even though Comic Con is still some time away from triggering its annual hullabaloo, the continent of Africa is already feeling the frenzy as Emerald Comic Con and New York Comic Con organisers have announced that comic book convention would be setting afoot in the ‘dark continent’ too this year, from 14 to 16 September.

ReedPOP, the organisers of ECC and NCC, declared it would be held at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit and International Convention Centre, in South Africa. In no time, the Comic Con Africa has started accepting applications for exhibitors from the comic, television, films and collectibles industry. And much to the delight of the anxious fans, the convention would also feature autograph sessions, comic merchandises, e-sports competitions and cosplay; like any other Comic Con convention across the globe.

The success of Black Panther brought to light the continent’s stern affinity towards modern pop-culture, and it’s this overwhelming delirium that just may be the driving force behind steering the Comic Con boat towards the African shores. VS Gaming, one of the largest gaming tournament organisers in South Africa, partnered to make this happen and would thereby also presumably focus a healthy amount of the convention on games.

Ticket prices and booking details haven’t revealed yet, although more developments are expected in the weeks to come.

The semi final round of judging of the FICCI-BAF Awards 2018 was completed today at Animationxpress.com’s Mumbai offices in the suburb of Goregaon West. Two esteemed juries judged the animation and VFX main categories. AnimationXpress.com  was last month appointed as an auditor and consultant of this year’s awards by India’s leading trade body – the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).

The awards have attracted more than 400 entries from domestic and international studios for work done domestically and globally. And animation jury members Vaanarsena Studios founder Vivek Ram, TASI founder Ranjit Singh and Vaibhav More Films founder Vaibhav More helped select the nominees to the next round. Ditto with VFX jury members Anibrain VFX supervisor Anirban Das, Digitales VFX supervisor Hemant Shinde and Avant Garde Films CEO Sohini Mitra De.

Faced with the repercussion of the video released on February 15, in social networks, which appears a submerged track, we wanted to pass some clarification. The fact really happened at the Rio de Prata Ecological Recanto (Jardim-MS) on February 02 and was recorded during the monitoring carried out by Waldemilson Vera.

When it rains a lot, the Rio da Prata river runs of slower form, causing its damming, thus increasing the water level of the Olho D’Água river.

Despite the flood, on the day the video was recorded the waters of the Olho D’Agua river remained crystal clear due to their conserved riparian forest and being inside a Private Reserve of the Natural Patrimony – PRNP, a type of Conservation Unit.

This was a rare episode, and by the end of the day the river had returned to its normal level.

We would like to inform that on this date the tour operated normally until the 1st stretch, which, although it is also above normal, all the tourists left satisfied because they experienced a different and special day in the attraction!

To Demonstrate How Spiders Fly (1909) | BFI National Archive

Charming animated illustration of one of nature’s wonders from Britain’s most inventive pioneer of wildlife filmmaking.

This typically delightful film from Britain’s great pioneering wildlife filmmaker F. Percy Smith uses model animation to capture one of nature’s engineering marvels: the spider’s web-building. Presumably judging that live-action photography wasn’t up to the job, Smith built his own charming eight-legged model, which he animates to illustrate how the spider “throws a thread of silk to the wind”. Arachnophobes beware: in the final few seconds the cute model is replaced by the real deal, seen shooting its web like an arrow.

This was Smith’s first attempt at animation, but it would become an increasing element of his films, sometimes to more deliberately comic effect, as in his series charting the adventures of Archie the Ant.
