Unity releases detailed insights on India market trends at ‘Unite India 2017’

Unity Technologies announced that India is now ranked third in global gaming installs, surpassing Brazil and Russia (source: Unity Analytics). This came from shared insights into the latest Indian gaming ecosystem trends that were presented at Unite India 2017 in Hyderabad. The debut of Unite India 2017 was hosted in collaboration with NASSCOM Game Developer Conference 2017, the premier event for the Game Developer Community in India.

According to Unity Analytics, latest market research shows that India has risen from the ninth position in January of this year to the third spot in global install rankings, surpassing Brazil and Russia to become one of the world’s largest gaming markets. This is due to the spike in India’s adoption of high-end mobile devices with larger RAM size. In one year, mobile device count with 1GB RAM has grown from 31.6 million to 100 million in October 2017.

“Unity analysed and studied the ongoing market trends and development in the Indian Mobile Industry,” said Unity Technologies director of South Asia Pacific Quentin Staes-Polet. “Based on our findings, we believe the mass adoption of high-end mobile devices will give the Indian gaming ecosystem ample opportunity to innovate and provide compelling content to development platforms.”

“Driven by the massive rush of cost-effective, high-end smartphones and the 4G revolution that began last year, the Indian mobile gaming market has been expanding at a rapid pace,” said NASSCOM Gaming Forum chairman Rajesh Rao. “Every Indian with a smartphone today is trying out games, and it’s not just young people. Additionally, the developer ecosystem is maturing rapidly, with several high profile games made in India seeing international commercial success. There has also been strong interest in the Indian market from venture capitalists. As a result, we expect this growth to increase and help the budding Indian gaming industry become one of the leaders in the global market.”

Unity is uniquely positioned to help understand trends across the mobile industry, with 87K made with Unity games and experiences generating 2.4 billion installs across 1.1 billion unique devices globally each month.

Unity Analytics research identified the following trends in the Indian gaming industry:

  • Card games, word games and sports games are the top three genres by time played per day in India in 2017.
  • Adoption of high-end mobile devices has dramatically changed the Indian gaming market in the last few years, which now includes over 200 games development studios and service providers.
  • User engagement sessions reveal that non-gaming genres such as social, medical, financial, food and beverage and travel, are growing faster in the application development industry.

Unite is Unity’s global developer conference hosted in eight countries and is the most important gathering of Unity developers, artists, publishers, educators and enthusiasts. The conference witnessed gaming industry experts and prominent spokespeople from the industry, under one roof, to give deep insight into the world of evolving technologies.

Unity exists to democratise development, solve hard problems and enable success — three core values that are the driving forces of Unity’s adoption by millions of creators. Games and experiences made with Unity reach more than three billion devices worldwide and were installed more than 16 billion times in 2016 alone.

Girgit Studios’ ‘Muskaan’ wins best short at Blender’s Suzanne Awards

Ever since the second Blender Conference in 2003, the Suzanne Awards are given to artists using Blender, to inspire, encourage and realise their outstanding artwork. This year, Girgit Studio’s Muskaan has won the best short award at Suzzane Film Festival.

The Blender Foundation is an independent non-profit public benefit corporation. Blender being an open source software the foundation maintains and improves the current Blender product via a public accessible source code system under the GNU General Public License. Artists and studios are encouraged to submit their best work. The Festival board reviews the highest rated submission and places it into one of three categories for nomination- best animation, best design, best short.

The most voted submission on each category gets nominated. These nominations are screened at the Conference during the animation festival in Amsterdam. Conference attendees vote, and the winners are announced at the Suzanne Awards ceremony.

“As a design studio, we try and achieve content, story, and visual styles based on the requirements of the project and its target audience,” said Girgit Studios director Swarup Deb. “We mix and match and merge many animation techniques and mediums to achieve the desired art. This also requires our production pipeline to be extremely agile and flexible. So we always keep looking beyond standard tools and software. It doesn’t make much sense for us to invest in expensive software serving standard production pipelines.”

Deb feels that Blender is at par with, and in certain aspects even better than other 3D software. It offers them flexibility and serves their creative requirements. “We never felt any limitation in the tool while executing our 3D projects. It doesn’t demand any different workflow as compared to other standard 3D softwares. In short – like we Girgits (meaning chameleons in Hindi) adapt to the requirement of the project, Blender adapts to our requirements!”

The team at Girgit Studios uses Blender for all 3D animation projects having mastered it technically and artistically. Apart from the two short films, the team has used the open source 3D creation suite for over 15 animation projects ranging from TVCs, brand films, explainer videos and more.

“Blender is easy to understand and because of this, even new members of the team need very short training after which they don’t find any difficulties adapting to it,” Deb shared.

But every project and software comes with its technical and creative challenges. “We were exploring cloth physics, fire and rain dynamics in Blender for the first time during Muskaan. That took us sometime to figure out and achieve the output we desired. But we had fun figuring it out,” he revealed.

Talking about submitting Muskaan for Suzzane Awards, Deb exclaimed, “Funny thing was that we entered our film into the awards and completely forgot about it. We ourselves never voted our film for nomination. So we were extremely overwhelmed to see complete strangers showing their love for the film by voting it to nomination.”

Sadly however, the nominations were declared two days prior to the event so the team could not make it personally to the awards. “We are all elated to receive this international appreciation for Muskaan, a film we made with our heart and soul,” he exclaimed with joy.

M&S Paddington Bear and the Christmas Visitor

Marks & Spencer (M&S) is running a tie-in advertising campaign featuring Paddington Bear for Christmas 2017. At the heart of the campaign is a television commercial, “Paddington and the Christmas Visitor”, in which Paddington unwittingly saves Christmas for his friends and neighbours. It’s Christmas Eve at Windsor Gardens and Paddington is fast asleep. However, his dreams of marmalade are interrupted by a loud thud on the roof. Upon investigation, he stumbles upon a burglar and despite the burglar’s protests that he is “not Santa” the determined and good-natured bear begins to ‘help’ him deliver the presents back to where they belong. Seeing the good in everyone, Paddington innocently helps the burglar see the error of his ways and as they place presents into personalised stockings and pause for mince pies, he unknowingly averts a crisis and ensures a truly special moment for neighbour Alice, and a happy Christmas for all.

“Paddington and Christmas Visitor” has been turned into a children’s Christmas storybook available in stores and online. All profits will be donated to the NSPCngC to help fund its vital Childline service over the Christmas season. M&S is hosting a series of book readings for children at stores around the UK – starting at its flagship Marble Arch store on Friday (10th November).

The campaign retains the philosophy of M&S’ ‘Spend it Well’ brand platform launched earlier this year – encouraging customers to focus on the people, experiences and things that matter to them most, something that is never more important than at Christmas. Paddington, who is named after the famous area of London where M&S is also based, will take a lead role in helping the retailer create a series of special moments for its customers and the communities it serves through partnership activity.

Cinema Tie-In

The campaign launch coincided with the world premiere of the StudioCanal and Heyday Film feature film Paddington 2. M&S’ media partner, Mindshare, have worked with Digital Cinema Media to ensure the 90 second advert is shown before the start of every screening of Paddington 2. M&S is also running dedicated screenings of the film for Sparks members and their children, as well as in the ten communities it’s supporting through Plan A 2025.

Paddington In-store

For the first time M&S will host a dedicated campaign shop to support its Christmas advertising campaign. Bespoke signage will lead customers to The Paddington Shop – housing over 90 themed products, the majority in kidswear, and of course Paddington’s favourite marmalade will be available in M&S Foodhalls. In another first, the iconic bear will be the first ever film character to star in the M&S Christmas windows. In to December, M&S’ team of in-store ‘Moment Makers’ will be surprising and delighting customers with Paddington-themed ‘Random Acts of Kindness’ – from a free marmalade sandwich in the café, to a cheeky Paddington chocolate at the till.

Online and Social

The retailer will bring Paddington’s iconic character to life for customers in a fully integrated cross channel campaign. The much-loved bear will take part in his first ever interview for M&S’ content hub Style & Living and there’ll be downloadable festive marmalade recipes suitable for all the family. Underpinning the entire campaign will be social support encouraging customers to #LoveTheBear.

Dame Esther Rantzen, founder of the NSPCC’s Childline said, “Christmas is an exciting time of year, but for some vulnerable children and young people it can be very difficult which is why Childline is there for them 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. This, of course, requires a great deal of funding, which is why we’re delighted to be partnering with M&S and Paddington to support the Childline service and raise awareness of the work we do. At only £3, with all profits going to the NSPCC, the book is excellent value for money and the perfect Christmas gift.”

Patrick Bousquet-Chavanne, Executive Director of Customer, Marketing & M&S.com said: “At M&S our customers are at the heart of everything we do and we know they love the magic of Christmas, most of all spending time with family and friends. Paddington has enchanted children and families all over the world for nearly 60 years which is why we couldn’t turn down the chance to bring the wonderfully endearing, much-loved British character and his world into the heart of our Christmas campaign this year. We always want to surprise and delight our customers; the timing is perfect as we’re partnering together just ahead of the release of Paddington 2.”

Rob Weston, Brand & Marketing Director at M&S said: “Paddington injects the sense of joy, love and neighbourly spirit that makes Christmas feel magical and our story reflects the inclusive, make the most of every moment approach that we take to our customer conversations.”

Vicki Maguire, Chief Creative Officer at Grey London said, “Two British icons coming together in a story of heart-felt redemption, at a magical time of year, is the brief that dreams are made of. Customer expectations for Christmas campaigns are always high, and for M&S this has never been truer than now following the positive response to ‘Spend it Well’. We cannot wait to see and hear the reaction as we spread the love, goodwill and marmalade this Christmas.”

Artsy – Turning Points Series

V-Ray Days VFX & Animation Day Mumbai: Another year of educating, enlightening and empowering artists

ARK Infosolutions in partnership with Chaos Group hosted the last day of V-Ray Days on 10 November at The Classique Club, Mumbai from 10:30 am to 7 pm. With a mix of free extended masterclasses, latest and future releases overview, guest sessions and more, V-Ray VFX & Animation Day Mumbai concluded the drive.

The first two sessions of the day were Render Makes The Difference and a masterclass on Super-fast rendering workflows with V-Ray RT GPU. Post lunch, DSK International Digital & Transport Design department head Rattan Gangadhar and digital design trainer Rohan Shedjale spoke about bringing life to industrial design. “We use V-ray daily in our pipeline. It is a preferred software. We are working very closely with ARK too. They have been helping and supporting us always,” said Gangadhar.

Attendees waiting in a line for registration

After a quick break, Chaos Group CG specialist Kalina Panteleeva took a masterclass on The Secrets of 3.6 in which she spoke about how not to be afraid of rendering characters and environments that have millions of polygons. She explained the newest features of the version that help save time and make the process efficient.

“Many people come to us for technical issues, and of course we help with that but at the end of the day, it is all online. If you know what to search, you can find it,” Panteleeva told AnimationXpress. “In this event, what I personally want to achieve is giving those people the perspective that it’s not only about deadline or technical difficulties, it’s about making a difference, making something of your own, expressing yourself and the project you believe in and think about the way it feels.” They thus help students and artists not only with the technicalities but also to think on the lines of the idea, story, how they want to do it and how they see it.

Next, Yellow Dogs chief commercial officer Tom Rockhill took a session on the limitless possibilities of cloud rendering. Yellow Dog is a UK-based company that provides a platform to animation and VFX studios to get access to cloud rendering really easily without being limited to one render farm or one cloud renderer.

Following that was a masterclass again by Panteleeva on V-Ray’s Phoenix FD 3.4 which is an all-in-one solution for fluid dynamics that help to simulate fire, smoke, liquids, ocean waves, splashes, sprays, mists and more. She elaborated on the quick presets, fast setup, intuitive controls, preview and render interactivity, and fast and flexible controls of the version.

Up next was a guest presentation by Happy Finish CG supervisor Heten Daiya and CGI lead Subak Patwardhan. Happy Finish is a studio that provides services of animation, VFX, CGI, AI, AR, VR and MR. The duo spoke about their work and how V-Ray helps them overcome day-to-day challenges in their workflow. “I have worked with a lot of renderers but V-Ray brings an ease of use and has given us a speed boost,” said Daiya.

Talking about V-Ray’s progressive modes – resumable renders, denoising, adaptive buckets, aerial perspective, render under mouse, render masks – he said that V-Ray is spearheading a lot of force in renderers.

“Previously, we were using built-in render engines of software and were not aware of anything better or more efficient,” shared Patwardhan. “After V-Ray, we have not used anything else. The result being- clients are happy, we are happy.”

The last was also a guest presentation by Prime Focus World technical director Hrishikesh Andurlekar and senior creative supervisor Dipan Gajjar, who spoke about their work pipeline and V-Ray utilisation in their animation projects.

“1250 shots, 87 minutes, 315 assets- these are the kinds of deadlines we have. Work is so much that we need render farm or we outsource it. However, we have built a great relationship with the V-Ray team which is a strength,” revealed Andurlekar. “When the artist is working on the shot, she/he only needs to know the sequence number and shot number. The rest is taken care of by the pipeline team.” Hence, they have extensive use of the V-Ray attributes.

Gajjar showcased stills of some extremely heavy BGs of their upcoming animated co-production with a Mexican studio, explaining the kind of high-end output they got with V-Ray. “The BGs were huge. But V-Ray came as a rescuer,” smiled Gajjar.

The four-day event had a count of more than 1000 attendees including students and artists. In terms of feedback, the event received an overwhelmingly positive response like every year as it is more about awareness and enlightening artists. “We make people aware of the software and its new features. That way people learn how to use it more effectively,” said ARK Infosolutions country manager (Chaos Group) Percy Daruwalla.

ARK Infosolutions, the nationwide distributor of V-Ray in India attends to customers who use the software as well as those who do not use them, providing software as well as hardware solutions. Their motto is educate and aware as much as they can in this field. And the response stated that, apparently!

Black Diamond Presents: Rhythm

We may call BD Athlete Joe Grant a “runner guy,” but honestly, those words fail to give a true notion of what he actually does. Truth is, Joe Grant heads into the mountains for a lot more than running. And what he finds out there, high among the craggy peaks, is what he likes to call rhythm. In this film, we captured Joe in his element, doing his thing and searching for that rhythm, deep in the heart of the Alps. Enjoy. Video: Cheyne Lempe
