Free Public Beta for Houdini Engine for UE4

Thu 26th Feb 2015 | News

[embedded content]

Side Effects Software has announced the Public Beta of Houdini Engine for Unreal Engine 4 in April 2015. This plug-in provides game studios with the capability of Houdini’s procedural technology working inside the Unreal Editor.

“Many developers have already leveraged procedural techniques in building their content, and tools like Houdini will enable even more possibilities,” says Ray Davis, Unreal Engine General Manager, Epic Games. “By combining the power of UE4 with Houdini technology developers will be able to create richer experiences – quicker than ever.”

Houdini’s procedural workflow involves building node networks that define a repeatable recipe. These networks are wrapped into custom smart assets which can be loaded into the Unreal Editor while the nodes are cooked by the Houdini Engine behind the scenes. While this is not a runtime solution, the Houdini Engine provides artists with an easy way to create their own tools that can be quickly shared with colleagues to ensure consistent high-quality results.

The planned release for the public beta is early April 2015 and the plug-in will support Unreal Engine 4.7. Game makers can test it using existing assets or they can build their own assets in either Houdini, Houdini Indie or the free Houdini Apprentice edition. Once the plug-in is officially released then a commercial or indie license will be needed to continue working.

Harrison Ford to Return for ‘Blade Runner 2’. Will Ridley Scott?

Thu 26th Feb 2015 | News

The sequel to the 1982 masterpiece “Blade Runner”, which was set in a fictional dystopian 2019 Los Angeles. will not be directed by Ridley Scott.  Denis Villeneuve, the director of the critically acclaimed “Prisoners”, is now in negotiations to direct Harrison Ford in the “Blade Runner” sequel for Alcon Entertainment.

The yet unnamed sequel will take place several decades after the original, and will be penned by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green. Ford, who will reprise his role as Rick Deckard, recently claimed that it was the “best thing he’s ever read.”

“We are honored that Harrison is joining us on this journey with Denis Villeneuve, who is a singular talent, as we experienced personally on ‘Prisoners,’” Kosove and Johnson said in a joint statement. “Hampton and Michael, with Ridley Scott, have crafted a uniquely potent and faithful sequel to one of the most universally celebrated films of all time, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with this amazing, creative team.”

The French Canadian director, Villeneuve is best known for gritty thrillers such as his work on the 2013 “Prisoners”. He was also nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award in 2011 for “Incendies”.  His next film “Sicario” stars Emily Blunt and Benecio Del Toro will be released later this year.

Evolve Playthings – If they Find It They’ll Play With It

Evolve, the national organization focused on making gun safety and responsibility the social norm, follows up its 2014 viral film success ‘Playthings’ with a print series that further illustrates the importance of keeping guns locked up when ever-so-curious children are at home. Four charmingly provocative ads feature kids playing with all manner of taboo household items – condoms, mom’s lacey lingerie, maxi pads, sex toys and tampons – with the simple reminder: ‘If they find it, they’ll play with it.’ That’s an embarrassing prospect if kids find a lacey bra, but it’s a terrifying one if they find an unlocked gun. The new initiative also includes out of home, digital and social elements.

It’s the same insightful, non-political message that helped ‘Playthings’ become the most viewed gun safety PSA in history, reaching more than 7MM people. The 30-second spot, also created by McCann Erickson, features a highly recognizable setting: two young boys on a play date, engaged in a sword fight, helmets and all. But as the mothers exchange pleasantries, they soon realize the swords aren’t really swords; they’re vibrators the kids found in the house, and the speechless women are left watching the scene unfold in cringe-worthy silence.

While the awkward humor has people taking notice of the campaign, it’s the good-sense approach to gun safety that’s really fueling the conversation, according to Evolve’s co-founder Rebecca Bond.

“Owning a firearm, and living with them in our communities, comes with the heavy responsibility of safety,” Bond says. “Let’s face it, kids find everything. Some things are simply embarrassing. Some things are potentially lethal and there is absolutely no do-over. Hoping that kids exercise good judgment – or are even capable of doing so – is not a bulletproof plan for any parent.

She added, ‘We have to keep finding more ways for everyone to take on these conversations; ensuring that no other lives are tragically impacted by lax and avoidable safety behaviors. Wouldn’t that be amazing?”

Said Sean Bryan, McCann NY co-Chief Creative Officer: “PSA’s around gun safety are, as a rule, scary and serious. So we decided to use comedy instead. And that relatable humor has really helped Evolve’s common sense message break through.”

The Evolve Playthings campaign was developed at McCann New York by chief creative officers Sean Bryan and Tom Murphy, associate creative directors Ferdinand Daniele and Thomas Weingard, chief production officer Nathy Aviram, senior art producer Wendy Leahy, account executive Rachel Heiss, print project manager Sharon MacKenzie, senior print producer April Gallo, with photographers The Selby and Kevin Zacher, working with Evolve co-founders Rebecca and Jon Bond.

Spectators

‘Spectators’ is an observational animation that inverts the expected focus of a football match, turning attention to those on the periphery. The film investigates social interaction and human behaviour, revealing the diversity of character found among football spectators, which can often become obscured by the mass.
