nDreams, the fast-growing UK virtual reality (VR) developer and publisher, today announced that it has received the second tranche of a $2.75 million (£1.75m) investment round from Mercia Technologies PLC, the technology-focused  investment businesses.  These funds will support continued expansion, provide working capital and allow the company to explore publishing and acquisition deals for other VR titles.

nDreams was one of the first game studios in the world to focus on VR software, and has been working on virtual reality since 2013. The company has several VR games and experiences in development including two launch window titles for the Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition (Gunner and Perfect Beach).

Gunner is an intense space combat experience with accessible controller-free gameplay and is co-published by Oculus. In contrast to Gunner, Perfect Beach is a unique relaxation experience that allows users to unwind on a glorious tropical beach. nDreams also recently announced The Assembly for Project Morpheus on the PlayStation 4 and Oculus Rift. The Assembly is a dramatic two–character VR adventure where players need to make tough moral choices and unravel the mysteries within a top-secret underground bunker.

nDreams is a pioneer in developing content for unique platforms, and was one of the first studios to create content for PlayStation Home, selling 1.8 million virtual items with more than 18 million visits to their free-to-play Aurora space. nDreams currently has five VR projects in development, and has been carrying out R&D in new, unexplored areas of virtual reality. The company recently announced a memorandum of understanding with UK VR entertainment firm, Virtual View Productions, to explore the crossover between filmed and game content in VR.

Patrick O’Luanaigh, Chief Executive of nDreams, said:

“We’re delighted to be strengthening our relationship with the Mercia team, and their support allows us to continue grow the business more quickly and to finalise our launch titles ready for all major VR headsets. We plan to expand the company significantly and will be actively exploring both publishing and acquisition opportunities in 2015.”

Mike Hayes, Head of Digital of Mercia Technologies PLC and non-executive Director of nDreams said:

“The additional funds will enable nDreams to exploit the innovative software for VR devices which it has developed over 12 months – it is now well positioned for growth in this exciting and very dynamic market.”

nDreams will be holding meetings at GDC and E3 this year, where the company aims to reveal more about their titles and plans for 2015.

Adidas #OriginalSuperstar on fame stereotypes

Footballer David Beckham, singer/songwriter Pharrell Williams, singer/songwriter Rita Ora and basketball player Damian Lillard share their thoughts on what being a superstar is and isn’t. Is it having a stylist, having everyone know you by your first name, people reading about what you had for breakfast? The campaign includes print ads of the celebrities redefining the superstar concept along with short films and photographs on the adidas Originals Instagram page.

Maroon 5 Wedding Crashers with Sugar

Los Angeles band Maroon 5 is promoting the single “Sugar” with a music video inspired by the 2005 romantic comedy Wedding Crashers. Shot on December 6 2014 by Wedding Crasher and The Judge director David Dobkin, the music video replaces Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn with lead singer Adam Levine and band travelling from wedding to wedding to provide guest performances at the reception. The grooms at each reception were briefed beforehand and it seems establishing shots included a few actors. However the weddings are the real deal. Levine is well known in the US for his role as coach on NBC talent show The Voice.

Dobbin explains the thinking behind the music video. “The joy was inherent in the concept… and the love of the band,” he explains. “I wanted to do something that captured their audience and the intimate connection they have with the band in a pure way. It is a time capsule of emotion that will always have the magic of the band inside it.”

Dobkin in an interview with VH1 reveals some of the work behind the scenes.

“It was pretty intense. I was like, nobody can know, but then I realized, one person is going to have to know. I didn’t want the brides to know so we talked to the grooms. Until the week before, the groom didn’t even know who the band was. We said, this is a Grammy award winning top 10 band. We’re coming to your wedding and here’s how it’s going to work. I realized there had to be a reveal. That moment of recognition, that’s the juice. So I need them to be behind a curtain and the curtain drops and it reveals them. I had to design and build this thing that was like a pop-up tent and then you could press a button and the curtain drops. It sounds simple but it took us the better part of a month to figure it out. It was just a nightmare. Then I got to all the wedding planners around L.A. and had to go to all the venues to see how we could infiltrate them without anyone knowing. There was only going to be a 20 minute window for us to sneak in, pop up the tent, and get the band in without anyone noticing them. I had 6 cameras set up and dressed as if they were in the wedding. You really only have one shot at this. It ended up being 7 or 8 weddings, all in one day, some day, some night.”
