One of this year’s most visually arresting and graphically relevant spots, “Dirty Water” was drawn, performed and directed by Clément Beauvais, a young French filmmaker, illustrator, musician and photographer.

The campaign urges journalists to spread awareness of the fact disease caused by unfit drinking water is the world’s leading cause of death and appeals to readers to sign a petition at votregouttedeau.org.

Arthur de Kersauson, producer at Hush in Paris: “The client wanted to find a way to make ink and water interact to raise awareness of the dirty water problem. The main creative challenge was to find symbols that could be drawn with water because very few things can be drawn using this technique. We also had to try lots of different papers and inks to find the best match to control the diffusion process.”

UNICEF Video Game Reality

UNICEF is raising awareness of the plight of children in South Sudan with a pitch for “Elika’s Escape”, a fake video game, at a gamers conference in Washington DC. A presenter (Joe Sabia) at VGU (Video Gamers United) at the Washington Convention Centre, in August 2014, provided an exclusive preview of Elika’s Escape to an audience who became increasingly disturbed by the game’s premise. Members of the audience began to walk out as it became clear that the game’s protagonist was a victim of desperate circumstances. The film has been released on the first anniversary of the outbreak of the South Sudanese Conflict in December 2013. UNICEF is promoting conversation on the plight of children in South Sudan using the Twitter #southsudannow hashtag on Twitter and Facebook.

UNICEF Elika's Escape

“This is an exclusive preview of Elika’s Escape,” the presenter said. “First-person shooters, post apocalyptic survival stories? Those are very, very popular right now. But Elika’s Escape features something very special. You play a 7-year old little girl as the protagonist. A child. The game starts with her mother dying of cholera. And in this first shot your older brother dies trying to defend you. Meanwhile, Elika herself — you — escape away and a bullet grazes your infant baby brother. We are taking the level of horror in this game even to infants. Once you make it to a refugee camp, things aren’t much better. The stench of sewage permeates the area, and you become so desperate that you consider prostitution to help make money to feed your family.”

Mari Malek, a South Sudan refugee herself, added that while Elika’s Escape the game may be a work of fiction, the plight in the region is too real. “Elika’s story is true,” Malek says. “She is me, and she is so many of the South Sudanese children that are going through this experience at this moment.”

Making Of Christmas Zoetrope Idents for TVE

This is a sneak-peak into the process and work that we carried out to create the Christmas idents for TVE. Two months of intense work, lots of experiments and trials, thousands of pieces of paper and bated breath to see if the zoetropes would finally work. It’s nice to get away from our screens once in a while and work with our hands. This was a truly incredible project!

Marco Polo Title Sequence

Mill+ co-director Ben Smith and co-director Bryce Wymer teamed up with Netflix to create the stunning title sequence for Marco Polo, a new original series for Netflix, written by John Fusco and produced by The Weinstein Group. Handmade Christmas Zoetrope Idents for TVE

For Christmas 2014, TVE wanted to do something very special. We created three zoetropes entirely from scratch, made from thousands of hand-cut pieces of paper, including the TVE claims. Based on Christmas, New Year’s Eve and the Three Kings, each ident is infused with that special nostalgia of long-ago cinema techniques. The zoetropes were lovingly made with elements that remind us of the past: paper, record players for the spinning bases, lighting and animation techniques. The 18 frames and spinning velocity were crucial, as well as the camera diaphragm speed, to achieve each magical moment. The pieces spring to life in darkened rooms, propelled by the magic of Christmas and TVE; each zoetrope placed in a home, just as TVE has been a part of everyone’s home since 1956.

1960s commercial for Dream Whip

A B&W copy of a non-B&W commercial. Sometimes this happens. A classic commercial for Dream Whip.

Classic Commercials for Defunct Products (Part 33)

More products that have been discontinued. Products include L’erin, Rinso, Calometric, Studebaker, Ken-L Ration, Rybutol, and others.

Classic commercial for L'aura cosmetics

A fascinating commercial for the L’aura range of make-up, contrasting a fussy woman with a realistic woman (well, realistic by make-up commercial standards at least). This was a division of Sara Lee, and was short-lived. I found this commercial in the Adviews section of the Internet Archive. You should visit it…it’s a lot of fun.
