Graphics Card Pondering

Hey guys, so im starting a post graduate course at Seneca with thier VFT program.
I have a pretty beast computer (quad core i7 processors, 12gb ddr3 ram, 1.5tb harddrive, and a 5770 hd liquid cooled video card)
However this is a gaming card.
My computer runs the editing rather well, i havent had any big issues yet, but i have had to turn off openGL in after effects. Im wondering what the most recommeneded top 3 video cards are (under 2.5 – 3grand xD ) that i should use. Im also trying to find out if my computers ram is upgradable and i dont wanna take off the side :p

Im also buying a 15" Macbook Pro 2.66ghz for traveling and in class. Ill likely max the ram in this to 8gb.

Any recommendations for things to do? After fees i have about $6737.00 left to buy myself some gear.

Thanks!

3DEqualizer Scene Orientation Question

Hey,

i’m working my way trough the 3DE tutorials and im stuck at orientating my scene..

I manually tracked 3 points on the ground to align my XZ plane and also set one point as the origin. In the 3D view my pointcloud is looking nice however… my grid is way off.

I dont understand the concept of the scene "handle". It seems to define my grid and all but why? I would expect my grid to be at my defined planes/origin. Then all my geo would be in the correct space.

This is my first time using 3DE and im coming from PFTrack and Syntheyes so i hope this isnt too much of a newbie question. 🙂 Couldnt find any info about this in the tutorials/3DE v3 manual..

I’ll attach a screenshot showing the problem..

XSI pipeline on mocap

Hi guys
i have need of support for some tasks my company is facing right now, we where almost working totally on max, but for our last project, a short movie totally 3d, weve moved our pipeline on softimage, we will do lots of motion capture and been totally new to that workflow, i dont know which is the best pipeline to work with..
we’ve heard that doing mocap and refining it in motion builder to export them in xsi its a solution, but it involveds aswell some scripting to automatize those tasks, both in mb and xsi.
We are williing of course to pay aswell to have the workflow in place and ready to start working, my email is hidalgoserra@inximagine.it
thanks for any help.

nuke crash when watching fbx-geo in 2d viewer

hey guys,

i´ve got a finedetailed fbx-geo in my 3d-scene. everything is ok as long as watching/modifying it in the 3d-viewer. but in the moment i view the scanlinerenderer and switch the viewer to 2d, nuke closes immediately!!
it does not happen with other geos in the comp(a little less complex ones). but i think my machine shoulf be strong enough for that.

i tried to modify several viewer setting, readgeo-node settings or scanlinerenderer settings, as well as rebuilding a new comp from scratch with only this geo. all the same 🙁

any ideas?

thanks!!!!

btw, i´m running Nuke 6.1v3,
my machine is quadcore q9000,
8 gigs Ram,
nvidia quadro fx 2700 mobile

Buck: Against Dumb

Buck‘s back again for Smart Car’s campaign, Against Dumb. It’s the eco-friendly-car idea explored in quite a particular way; a retro colour pallette, mixed with a precise sense of timing and narrative transitions, adds up to a solid piece of classic Buck.

Creative Director Orion Tait kindly shared some words about the project with Motionographer:

“Our pals over at Strawberry Frog approached us with a great little script, an open animation brief and a pretty tight schedule. We’ve done a couple projects with them recently, and they loved the piece we did for Waiting for Superman. Striking the right balance of tone was important; If taken too seriously or too flippantly, we ran the risk of alienating viewers and accentuating the potential hypocrisy in a message like this. So the direction was to have fun with it, to be anthemic without being preachy. As always, music and sound design help quite a bit in this regard, and as always Antfood totally nailed it.”

Logonom: Symbolizing Excellence

Opening titles and sponsor reels have, for the most part, become boring. If not fully redefining the aesthetic or technical envelop, content-less flare just doesn’t cut it anymore.

This is far from the case with this well written and executed, corporate film spoof from Optimus the for 2010 AICP-Midwest Conference, Logonom. Usually working with an open brief, it’s great to see people using opportunities like this to flex all their creative assets.
