Psyop: Milk “Sad Princess” and “Medusa”

psyop-milk

Psyop crafted these two grin-worthy fairy tales for the California Milk Processor Board and agency Grupo Gallegos: “Sad Princess” and “Medusa.”

This is a study in the art of narrative compression. Each spot feels like fully realized fairy tale—and yet nothing is rushed. From the lush mattes to the tiny dancing mouse at the end of “Sad Princess,” each frame feels like a pitch board packed with detail.

Psyop apparently had some serious creative leverage in how exactly to illustrate Gallegos’ scripts. Says Creative Director Marco Spier:

We had a lot of fun coming up with the possibilities of her wrath. And thinking about how to transition from her tender little tear drop-into wreaking havoc on the town’s men, before turning into a tumultuous ocean, in a legendary storm, all in 2.3 seconds.

One technical note: Scrub through the snakes-to-hair transformation at the end of “Medusa.” While a cross-disolve might have done the trick, the snakes are actually morphing into hair. Despite not registering on a conscious level, labor-intesive details like that are what separate Psyop from the herd.

It may be technically correct, but changing a pixel aspect preset from one version to the next is NOT a good idea in my book. Oh, and why didn’t they change the very same preset in Photoshop CS4?

Mekanism Creates Bollywood for Interactive One Show

[NEWS=”http://www.cgnews.com/wp-content/uploads/oneshow_rain_thumb.jpg”]19784[/NEWS]Mekanism has been tapped by The One Club to create the promotional creative for 2009’s One Show Interactive awards. One Show Interactive takes place in New York City, May 7-8, and is the industry’s most prestigious awards competition celebrating the year’s best in digital media and web design. The promotional material is based on this year’s Bollywood theme and is a sequence of moving portraits, as a parade of characters takes their turn on screen in their rawest emotional states. Bright, solid-colored background focus attention on each cast member as they play their part in the mini drama.

The edgy, interpretive storyline is an ideal representative for the type of creative work honored at the One Show Awards. The live action shorts will be showcased in Times Square, NYC, May 1 – 8, 2009, in addition to serving as the basis for all of the promotional and branding for the awards ceremony.

Quote:

“The attendees at The One Show are the most discerning creative advertising minds in the world and we’re honored to have been selected by Kevin Swanepoel, President of The One Show, to craft this essential component of the award show’s promotion” said Ian Kovalik, Creative Director of Mekanism. “The materials we’ve created for the Interactive One Show offer rich, compelling visuals filmed with the best equipment we can get our hands on.”

A Phantom HD High Speed camera was used by Mekanism to bring to life One Show Interactive’s Bollywood theme. With a 1000 fps speed, the Phantom creates a unique high-resolution, super slow motion image that captures and highlights the drama of small moments found in the lives of eight fictionalized Bollywood characters that were concepted by Mekanism. Scott Barry, directed the shoot which took place in Los Angeles.

About Mekanism:
Mekanism is a San Francisco and New York based creative production studio, housing film, animation and digital content creators. We sprinkle our love of good storytelling on viral campaigns, commercials and branded entertainment to inspire measurable brand loyalty.

Quote:

“Mekanism really nailed this work,” said Kevin Swanepoel, President of The One Show. “We’re always looking for that elusive combination of supreme competence and fresh ideas, and Mekanism delivered for us.”

Making a Kung Fu Energy Ball

In this new tutorial from Pro Juice, Nick takes you through the steps of creating an energy ball with the Particle Filter in Adobe After Effects.

Using a layer of smoke, blurs, colour correction and some masking techniques, Nick shows you how to create the energy ball, give it a burning hot spot, animate it to fly towards the camera and reflect off the nearby fence.

Kung Fu Arlo

You can also download the sound effect (created by Arlo) used in the animation on the tutorial page to use in your own project.

LBL-004_MIRROR_RODRIGUEZ

Hey Guys,

In trying to work a little bit more with my Still-Life object I decided to make another project where my goals would be to match and combine the reference I used for my Still-Life Project (http://www.vfxtalk.com/forum/lbl-004…ct-t19590.html) and the one I modeled in Maya in the same shot by making something crazy or supernatural such as a reflected ghost, the mirror breaking by itself and flying through the air.
The mirror was broken, animated and lit in Maya, some work in Photoshop and the final comp in Nuke.

I hope you guys like it.

Cheers,

Monica

New “Solid Duration” Script

Hey all,

Just posted up a new script called Solid Duration. For all of you that have been wanting to simplify creating a simple solid that will be used for a backdrop. Link is below image.

FEATURES:

– Dockable (or can be run from the scripts menu as a floating window)
– Can select multiple layers to apply workflow to.
– Custom color for every solid created
– Places new solid directly underneath selected video layer
– Trims the in and out points to match selected video layer
– Names new solid the same as video layer plus the word “Backdrop”

What it DOES NOT do right now:
– Let you type a custom name
– Fit the video layer size (always same size as comp)
– Make your coffee
– Solve the worlds problems

Hope it comes in handy for you.
