The best clanging, post-punkish, dirge with Ian Curtis style vocals over real-deal-Martin -Hannett-apocalypse-always-style production ever. This is definitely what Interpol would have looked like at the other end of their Joy Division makeover if they had any taste to begin with. But this is actually way beyond any of that garbage. These dudes are absolutely amazing in their own right. So, check out their myspace HERE.

LBL-Insect Project

Hey Guys,

Well this is one of most the challenging piece of work I’ve done at Lost Boys. The butterflies were modeled and animated in MAYA, and in order to have better control of the wings it was necessary to use set driven keys. The final comp was done in NUKE.

Any comment or critic is welcome 🙂

Lens 3D Camera doesn’t match Real Camera…

Hello,

A problem that I have when I track my footage in Syntheyes and place a 3d object over it in Syntheyes or 3dsmax (same problem) it doesn’t completely match the footage. For example if I place a Box over a building the perspective isn’t perfectly right. Like half an inch off. The track is solid and the cube does follow the camera perfect too.

Is this a lens distortion problem? Or is there something wrong with the settings in my 3d camera?

I hope that someone can help me out with this.

Thanks alot,
Maarten

Another water (waves) question

Hi there.

Here is a movie (great) created by maya and realflow
http://www.vimeo.com/3911557

at the first scene, there are waves.

I tried to get a similar effect with realflow (realwave) but it seems that it either has VERY high subdivision (just look at how sharp it looks !) or it’s being donw with some other technique.

To be honest, I do not believe the subdivision lie.

How can this be made ?

I messaged the author and got "realflow and maya" reply.

I’m using c4d normally.

strange Alpha issue

Hi @ all!

I have a strange alpha channel problem, maybe someone can help me.

Said first, this happens both with straight AND premultiplied rendered images. We compose in 32bit float, linear blending on. But this happens also in 8bit.

I attached a jpg to show the worklfow better.

a) I imported a rendered cube from max, exr file.

b) i extremely over-exposed in AE

c) i put the original cube on top

–> jaggy and strange edges…

solution for now:

ignore the alpha channels and at the end, a re-imported cube with alpha activated cuts out the alpha channel “on top”.

But this is not a real good solution, because if the comps get bigger and bigger with lots of reflection layers and so on, there is no simple “cut out on top” solution.

Do you have any infos how to handle this strange issue right?

Like I said, detailed pic as an attachment is inside here.

Thx a lot, Dez

Camera Export from Nuke TO Maya

hello,

i am trying to export my nuke camera into maya. but despite after importing the chan file and calculating the aperture settings from nukes centimeters into mayas inches no placed geometry will fit int the scene. have i forgotten something very important???

Is After Effects even used as compositing software in the industry?

The reason I ask is because I know AE in and out … it’s been my comp software of choice for many years, and was used in my Visual FX degree program while in school. I’m aware of node-based software, such as Nuke or Fusion, but the interface and workflow is just so drastically different, I feel I need to invest in some classes to learn it (something I don’t have time for at the moment). As a junior compositor, it’s probably in my best interest to eventually learn the node-based software, but is that something that’s high priority right now? If there are still Visual FX (not Mograph) companies out there that use AE, I would be interested in who they are and what they do… if not, then damn… I gotta find some time or really good tutorials to get on this stuff!

Plate Treatment

Hey guys was just wondering if anyone has any tips when it comes to treating footage for a matchmove. I know that most matchmove software will let you do some minor changes; like colour correction, but is it better to do any changes in a comping package then export the altered plates to then camera track? What changes work best? i know that it depends entirely on the type of shot your tracking and the footage etc but is there a must do treatment that you guys know?

Cheers!
